Age Group Changes Coming in 2026–27
What Paladin Families Need to Know
Beginning with the 2026–27 season, U.S. Youth Soccer (USYS) and US Club Soccer will transition from a birth year registration model (January 1–December 31) to a seasonal year model (August 1–July 31), or commonly known as school year model.
Arizona Soccer Association (ASA) has confirmed this change for competitive play starting in 2026–27.
What Is Changing?
Starting August 1, 2026:
- Age groups will be formed based on August 1 – July 31
- All USYS competitions (National Championships, Presidents Cup, National League) will follow this cycle
- There is no change for the 2025–26 season.
Why the Change?
After surveying more than 15,000 stakeholders nationally, U.S. Soccer and member organizations determined that:
- School-year alignment supports social development
- It reduces “trapped players”
- It promotes stronger team chemistry
- It allows players to compete alongside classmates
- It improves college recruiting visibility for graduating classes
The goal is long-term participation, retention, and player experience.
Will My Child Change Teams?
Some players—particularly at younger age groups—may shift teams to align with the August 1 cutoff.
However:
- 2025–26 remains unchanged
- Team conversations will begin in March 2026
- We will communicate clearly and early
- In March coaches will begin working alongside new teams in preparation for 2026–27
How Do I Check My Child’s New Age Group?
U.S. Soccer provides an official Age Group Lookup Tool. We will also publish Arizona-specific matrices as we approach tryouts.
Our Commitment at Paladin
Transitions like this can feel disruptive—but they also provide opportunity.
Our focus will remain on development, communication and community.
February is about information. March will bring clarity around teams.
